Adsense Is Back

It's an odd title, isn't it? AdSense is back?

I bet you never even realized that it had been 'away', did you?

In truth of course, AdSense has been around since the early 1990's in one form or another and it definitely did not disappear at any time in the recent past.

What did change is that within the online marketing community, the concept of using AdSense to make money from a website began to seem a little dated and tired a few years ago.

At the same time, it also seemed to get a little more difficult to earn a decent income from AdSense, hence many marketers decided to test alternative ways of making money from their sites.

The changes really came about because several factors all came together at the same time.

Firstly, difficult financial conditions across the globe mean that advertisers are paying less for online advertising than they were a few years ago.

Consequently, if you use AdSense to make money from your site or blog, it is possible that you are getting paid less per click than you would have done previously.

Secondly, many of the most successful AdSense advertisers attained their market pre-eminence by 'gaming' the AdSense system. They did not exactly breach the program rules but many marketers certainly 'bent' them as far as they possibly could without actually risking their AdSense earnings.

One example that was regularly seen a few years back was to place an attractive image right next to or above an AdSense advertising block. Doing this did not breach the exact 'letter' of the program rules as there was no rule about images.

However, there was a rule that you were not allowed to do anything to attract the attention of your site visitor to your ad block.

What other reason could there be for placing an attractive image next to or above an ad block if it was not to attract attention?

Hence, this practice was within the letter of the law but definitely outside the spirit of them as far as Google was concerned.

Google is the biggest online advertiser in the business. This is not a position that they are likely to let go of without a very determined fight.

Consequently, every time a savvy marketer comes up with an AdSense loophole, Google close it as soon as it comes to their attention. More people use the same loophole, the more quickly they spot and close it.

As each moneymaking loophole got 'stamped on', AdSense became less attractive for those marketers who relied on 'tricks' and 'games' to make money from the program.

Now, AdSense is back in the sense that some marketers are making very good money from the program but they are doing so without having to resort to gaming the system.

On the contrary, the way you make good money with AdSense has essentially returned to the roots of doing so, the 'rules of the game' that have been around almost as long as the program itself.

For a start-off, you need effective market research to find niches and keyword terms that you can use to drive traffic to your site.

Secondly, you need a site that offers quality and value to your visitor, content and information that gives them exactly what they want when they land on your webpage.

If you combine these two factors with an ability to drive a constant stream of targeted visitors to your site and you will make money with AdSense even if you are getting paid a few cents less per click than you would have a year or two ago.

If you research your topic, build a high-quality site and send targeted traffic to it, you will make just as much money as you could ever have done.

This is the real reason why AdSense is back!

I grant you that it seems a frivolous concept to suggest that AdSense has really been anywhere. The text ads placed by the Google advertising behemoth are still visible on millions of websites and on the search results pages, so it may be difficult to see just what 'AdSense is back' is getting at.

In another way however, the suggestion is nowhere nearly as silly as it might at first appear.

The fact is that over the past two or three years, the idea of making money using AdSense has lost some of the attraction and popularity that it had just a few years ago. As it always does, the online marketing world has moved on with new ideas, concepts and ways of making money that have to an extent superseded the popularity of AdSense.

Not only has AdSense been replaced by other new ideas and concepts, many of the 'smarter' ways that online marketers used to use AdSense have been banned by Google.

Many marketers would therefore suggest that making money with AdSense has become more difficult because they are no longer allowed to use the 'trick' methods that were once in vogue.

Add this to the suspicion that the global financial squeeze has reduced AgSense 'per click' payouts and there are plenty of reasons why AdSense has become less popular than it once was.

However, over the past few months, a steady climb in my own AdSense results suggests that the tide might be turning. Perhaps because less marketers feature AdSense advertising on their sites, visitors to my own sites and blogs seem to be more willing to click on the ads than they were just a few months ago.
